Ford Recall News

On January 27, 2005 Ford Motor Company announced a Ford Explorer recall and Ford Truck Recall of almost 800,000 pickups and sport utility vehicles due to the risk of fire caused by a faulty cruise control deactivation switch. Ford will be notifying owners of the Ford recalls in February, at which time your local Ford dealers will deactivate the switches at no cost to you. As soon as Ford amasses an adequate supply of the replacement switches, owners will be notified and will be able to have the faulty switches replaced. Windstar recalls are a possibility and the best place to check for these and all Ford recalls is the NHTSA sited below.

The faulty cruise control deactivation switches can short circuit and start a fire under the hood. The models affected include 2000 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator. Also listed as affected are model year 2001 F-Series Super crew trucks. As of yet, 1999 model years are not currently affected by the recall, but if you find you are experiencing any problems with your 1999 Ford pickup truck or SUV please contact National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/.

In similar news, a federal investigation was launched in November of 2004 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The investigation began after complaints were received of engine fires in F-150, Expedition and Navigator Ford models. According to the NHTSA report there had been at least 36 incidents of fires across the country the majority involving the model year 2000 Ford F-150. In every case the vehicle was parked and the engine was off when the fires started. This very report linked the fires to faulty speed control deactivation switches.

In December 2004 Ford recalls numbered 262, 113 Ford Escape SUVs to repair a defect in the rear gate, which could fall open in an accident. This was the second recall for these vehicles in the same month. The recall covered 2001-2005 models. Additionally, 49,800 Mazda Motor Corporation’s Tribute SUVs, which are very similar to a Ford Escape, were recalled for the same problem. Earlier in the month of December 2004 Ford recalled 470,245 SUVs from the 2002-2004 model years because of a possible accelerator defect that could result in elevated engine speeds.
